“I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” ~ Notting Hill
And the day arrived – the day Gert and Liezl waited for …. the day they started their new life together.
As wedding photojournalist, it is my primary goal and passion to capture The Story of a Wedding day. And this wedding presented it’s own, very unique, precious story.
A story of sadness but also joy, loss but also gain, hard days but also fun days. In short, a story I love to tell.
The wedding took place at Monate Game lodge in Limpopo province. It was a weekend affair, a glorious destination wedding. Family and friends arrived on Sunday 30 December, starting off the celebrations with a game drive. We were entertained by lions, big and small game, and off course, the most beautiful sunset, with storms brewing, at the Hippo dam. Presenting us with the most beautiful pictures to start the weekend with.
Early morning of Monday 31 December, we suspected the weather was not going to be 100% what our couple wished for. Although we all prayed for country wide rain, we just hoped for it to keep clear for another 12 hours. But, the forecast said it all … 100% chance for rain. The ceremony still took place under the lovely wild fig tree, but the reception had to move from the boma to the formal venue. And just as well ……
But getting back to the morning’s proceedings. We started off photographing Gert’s prep session … and boy, did we have fun!! First we struggled a bit to get images, as it was raining. But then it stopped, and we started capturing Gert with his crazy bunch!
Moving over to Liezl, things were bit more calm. Mom Ilze was busy doing her magic with Liezl’s hair, while sis Marieke completed Liezl’s and the bridal party’s make up with so much beauty. When Liezl got dressed, I just knew … this bride was made for this day!! So so beautiful.
We arrived at the ceremony, where Liezl’s dad, Tjaart, a preacher who also conducted the ceremony, awaited her, and walked her down the isle. Gert, emotionally showing appreciation of his lovely bride, waited for her at the altar.
Then, with everybody highly emotional, some guests crying and others keeping a respectful silence, witnessed a beautiful ceremony … Liezl’s brother and only son of Tjaart and Ilze, tragically passed away a year ago. Gert’s lovely first wife, passed away a few years earlier of cancer. The families paid respect for this enormous losses, by bringing in photographs and candles, as dedication to the two people who did have the privilege to witness this blessed wedding.
After the ceremony, we started the couples shoot, with a huge storm on it’s way. And yes, we did not expect it to arrive so soon!! We left the game viewing vehicle at the hippo dam, setting up, and within the next 5 seconds, the heavens opened!! Wet wet wet … is only way I can think to describe how soaked to the bone were all were!
Arriving at the venue, with EVERYONE soaked to the skin, the reception started. Once again much emotion, but also much love expressed by all present.
And, with bubbly sprayed all over the guests by the happy bride, we entered 2019!! Lots of dancing, singing, celebrating all along!!
What a wedding!!
This story of Love, Hope and Happiness will always stay with me.
We were honored to be part of this beautiful occasion.
